My Technique

Although I am a classically trained musician, I have always appreciated great music of varied genres. I make use of this diversity to engage my students as enthusiastic learners. No matter what style of music we explore together; classical, jazz or a variety of popular music, my focus is always on the essential elements of music. In their lessons with me, young children as well as mature adults learn to listen, understand, and appreciate the music they are studying in addition to acquiring the skills to experience the joy of making music themselves as pianists.

Teaching fundamental skills and the elements of musical expression is not enough; the shaping of a musical phrase and creating contrasts in mood through varying the volume of sound are among the many nuanced techniques that make playing music so exciting. In order to successfully engage a student, it is very important that the teacher understand individual differences in learning styles and personality, utilizing that understanding in creative, empathic ways. I consider those qualities to be one of my particular strengths as an educator.

Becoming a Student

Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes long depending on the needs of the student. Typically, lessons are scheduled on a once weekly basis.

My fees are standard for this area; however, there is some flexibility in my rates to ensure that motivated children and adults have the opportunity to become music students.

In working with both children and adults, I teach them how to practice in a focused way that maximizes the benefits of whatever amount of time is spent at the piano. This approach enables them to incorporate the musical ideas that we discuss during lessons into effective mastery of the pieces they are studying in the shortest possible length of time. This frees us to work on a greater amount of repertoire.

Initial Lesson

I ask each prospective student to schedule an initial trial lesson, which I offer free of charge. This first meeting provides an opportunity to discuss your goals and expectations in regard to piano study.
